Images of War series
6th SS Mountain Division Nord at war 1941-1945
Another excellent book in the Images at War series. As a scale modeler I really appreciate these books, even though the images are – logically – only in black and white. This particular book is an excellent source to learn more about the German (and other Axis nations’) activities in the north of Finland and Russia, which is where this particular division saw action most.
As usual in this series the book only has a few pages with accompanying text, as most is occupied by photos and their captions. Which is fine, after all, this is a photobook !
And there’s enough information provided in the captions. Some very interesting facts about the weapons used among other things. The photos also give a good impression of the often very harsh environment these soldiers found themselves in. They were not only fighting the Russians, but just as much Mother Nature !
The main value of this book to me however remains in the many photos providing ideas for dioramas to build in our 1;35 scale modeling hobby, with an emphasis on the before and after battle scenes. Bivouacs, ruined buildings, resupply activities, broken and bogged down vehicles, transport, river crossings, travel….. it is all there !
